Why sort transactions in the Excel checkbook register?

Sorting transactions by date in the Excel checkbook registers is important to allow you to easily scan items by their transaction date, the date on which the deposit, payment, purchase, transfer, etc occurred or their posted date (the date the bank or credit card company posted the transaction to your account).

Which date you use in the Excel checkbook register depends on how you enter or download transactions into the registers. When it comes time to do your monthly bank account reconciliations, having the transactions in date order will allow you to easily compare them to the transactions listed in the bank statement.

How to sort transactions in the Excel checkbook register?

The Sort By Date button at the top of a Register will sort the transactions in the Register by oldest date to newest date unless there are error(s) noted in the Balance column. After sorting, the transactions with the oldest dates will be at the top of the Register.

Clicking the Sort By Date button will first remove any applied Filters in the Register and then sort all transactions in the Register by date.

The sort feature within the Filter arrows located in the column headings has been disabled.

Clicking the Delete Empty Rows & Sort button at the top of the checkbook registers will also sort the transactions by date but it will only sort if there are also empty rows between transactions that need to be deleted.

The Sort By Date button at the top of the Excel checkbook registers can be used whether the register is used to manage your checking account, savings account, or credit card account.

Clicking the New Transaction button does not sort the transactions in the registers.

You can not sort the transactions in the checkbook software by fields other than the date field, however you can filter and search transactions using the filter arrows in the column headings.
